K Development, Inc.

Company: K Development, Inc.
Product: Plastic Product Design and Development
Annual Sales: Undetermined
Number of Employees: 2
Year Founded: 1996
Location: Erie, PA.

Situation:

A manufacturer of high-intensity lighting required delivery of a complete blow-molded prototype assembly of a hand-held spotlight housing designed by K Development. K Development, a two-person start-up, did not have the capability to create the prototype.

Project:

PTDC engineer Jon Meckley developed a solid model of the part and its required mold cavities using Pro/Engineer software. A tool company cut blow molds for the housing directly from the computer files.

Result:

K Development was able to present its client with a solid model of the housing; by bypassing detail drawings and mold machining, the model was available in half the usual time. The solid model indicated the design could also be produced using fewer pieces than first anticipated.

Company Comments from Chuck Kownacki; Principal and Jason Williams; Principal:

"Our customer benefited from our association with the PTDC, because we were able to produce the spotlight housing twice as quickly. Access to the Center's technology keeps our small company competitive."
