Viking, Plastics,
Inc.

Company:
Viking, Plastics, Inc.
Location: Corry, Pennsylvania
Product: Custom Injection Molding
Annual Sales: N/A
Number employed: 64
Years in Business: 23
Situation:
Viking
was having problems filling a part for a new product. Single gating
of a part caused core deflection, filling in what should have
been a hollow core and creating a nonfunctional part.
Project:
With
the help of the PTDC's affiliated Plastics Computer-Aided Engineering
Center, Viking was able to simulate the injection process and
filling pattern. New scenarios were tested without the time or
expense of creating new molds. A double gating scheme solved the
problem by filling both sides of the core simultaneously, creating
a centered hollow cavity.
Result:
A
functional part was created within two weeks. This represents
a significant, ongoing order for Viking.

Comments from Timothy Rastatter, Process Engineer:
"The
PTDC allows smaller companies like ourselves to become familiar
with and utilize computer-aided engineering software. We were
able to see how useful it can be without having to buy it right
off the bat, which can be a $30,000 investment. We are now in
the process of buying our own software; we've been given the training
to run the system, and the experience we need to utilize it fully."
