Testing of Various Plastic Material Samples After Application of a Newly Developed Secondary Process

Situation:
The customer was a start-up company that had developed a plausible use for a secondary process for specific plastic materials, but did not possess the internal facilities to directly test the hundreds of material samples on a comparison basis. We were contacted and asked to assist in the selection of appropriate testing methods and in performing the actual physical testing.

Project:
After selecting appropriate tests and completing the testing within the facilities located at Penn State Erie, all data was organized and a full report was written outlining the findings. After completion of the report, the PTC reviewed the results with the customer and discussed what the findings suggested, from our viewpoint.

Project Outcome:
The customer found that the secondary process was not able to provide the substantial increase in material properties as once believed. To date, the customer is revisiting the process, materials, and possible areas of application. More testing is anticipated as more work on their side is attempted.
