Design of a Remote Control Enclosure

Remote Control EnclosureSituation:
A metal enclosure existed for many years and was eventually replaced by a more modern formed version. This new version, while it had advantages over the old metal unit, consisted of its own set of disadvantages due to the inexperience of the customer in the field of plastics - some of the problems caused units Wireframe of remote control enclosureto be returned to the customer for refurbishing which in the end was negatively impacting the bottom line.

Project:
After learning more about the product legacy and the current set of issues, the PTC engaged in the following scope of work:

  • 3D Solid Modeling - the PTC began to model the new enclosure using Pro/ENGINEER solid modeling software - what is so unique about this project was that the customer's engineer decided to take an active role in the new design and was at the PTC's side throughout the design phase to assist in all design decisions ( ~ a one week investment of time )
  • Vendor Sourcing / Requests for Quotation - phase in which the PTC selected an appropriate vendor and requested a quotation for an SLA prototype of the design
  • Prototype - this phase consisted of a stereolithography prototype being produced and evaluated

Project Outcome:
The customer used the stereolithography prototype to assemble their electronic components and test the functionality of the remote enclosure. After proving the design internally, Solids model of enclosurethe prototype was shown to their prospective customer. By using the services of the PTC, our customer was able to shave approximately 5 months from their current projected schedule and get the product in to field trials much sooner than expected.
