Mold Sample of Complex Part for Medical Industry

Situation:
The customer was in the process of building a replacement mold of a complex part for a medical application. The 2nd generation part was very similar, although not exactly the same as the part it was replacing. The slight changes caused problems they were unable to correct through processing. The PTC was called in to use our processing and tooling expertise and evaluate the situation.

Project:
After verbally reviewing the issues with the customer and reviewing material data sheets and process sheets, the PTC engaged in the following scope of work:

• Held an introductory meeting at the customer's facility to introduce ourselves and discuss the problem in detail.
• Performed a rigorous mold sample at the customer's facility.
  • An optimum molding process was established as a baseline.
  • The injection fill rate, pack time, and pack pressure were scientifically determined.
  • Parameters were varied to examine the characteristics of the mold, material and machine (processing window). All observations were noted.
  • All changes and motives for such were explained in detail to the customer throughout the process to promote a learning, working environment.
• Held a review meeting discussing the results of the sample and whether potential solutions were viable from a cost and/or timing standpoint.
• Provided a detailed summary report including recommended course of action to solve the problem.

Project Outcome:
The customer is currently working through the recommended course of action and will soon be ready to sample their mold and commence production.
